Fit to Play & Learn

Fit to Play & Learn is a childhood obesity prevention program that was launched during the 2011-2012 school year in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). AAP-CA2 and School Nurses Act to Prevent Obesity (SNAPO) have collaborated on this program, which seeks to educate students and parents on the importance of healthy lifestyle choices. The program uses presentations, demonstrations, activities, and supplemental academic assignments in our schools.

Three key curriculum lessons:
  • Proper diet and nutrition
  • The importance of water as a main drink choice
  • Physical activity

AAP-CA2 has developed the curriculum materials, which are implemented through school nurses that are oriented and trained.

The Need: Obesity is a chronic epidemic that is sweeping the United States. With 1 in 3 children considered overweight or obese, it is imperative that students and parents learn about ways to prevent or correct the obesity problem in their communities. By implementing a hands-on, dual-learning approach for students and parents, Fit to Play & Learn seeks to improve children’s health in our communities.
